Condition Overview

ADHD Treatment: Overview

ADHD is one of the most misunderstood conditions in mental health. It’s presents in very different ways, and frequently goes unrecognised for years — particularly in adults and in those whose main difficulty is attention rather than hyperactivity. Getting it properly understood and treated changes lives, at any age, and the relief people describe after finally understanding themselves is often profound.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting the brain’s systems for attention, impulse control, and activity regulation. It isn’t a matter of laziness, poor discipline, or bad parenting — it’s a genuine difference in how the brain manages focus and self-control, with a strong biological and hereditary basis. ADHD often continues into adulthood, where it shows up less as visible hyperactivity and more as disorganisation, difficulty completing tasks, chronic lateness, restlessness, and ongoing struggles at work. Many adults with ADHD have found ways to cope that mask the underlying difficulty, often at the cost of considerable stress and exhaustion.

A useful distinction is between the two main features of ADHD: inattention and hyperactivity. Inattention looks like difficulty sustaining focus, being easily distracted, losing things, and struggling to finish what’s started. Hyperactivity-impulsivity looks like restlessness, difficulty staying still, interrupting, and acting before thinking. The inattentive type is often missed entirely, especially in quiet children who aren’t disruptive and in adults who’ve spent years assuming they’re simply disorganised or not trying hard enough. This is part of why so many people, especially girls and women, reach adulthood without a diagnosis.

ADHD is common in India. A study in Coimbatore found ADHD in around 11.3% of school children, and Indian research has reported prevalence commonly in the range of 5 to 12%. Many of these individuals, especially adults, are never diagnosed — they grow up being told they’re careless, lazy, or not applying themselves, and carry that belief for decades without knowing there’s a real, treatable explanation.

Virtual treatment makes assessment and ongoing care far more accessible, reaching people across Mumbai without the barrier of repeated clinic visits. For adults juggling demanding jobs and families, and for parents of children who can’t easily be taken out of school for appointments, the ability to receive expert ADHD care from home removes one of the main reasons people never get assessed at all.

5–12%

Estimated prevalence of ADHD among children in India

Research from India suggests that ADHD affects approximately 5–12% of children, making it one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders. Early identification and appropriate intervention can significantly improve academic performance, social development, and overall quality of life.

80%+

ADHD often continues into adulthood

Studies show that ADHD symptoms persist into adolescence and adulthood for many individuals. While hyperactivity may become less obvious with age, difficulties with attention, organisation, time management, impulsivity, and emotional regulation often continue to affect education, careers, relationships, and daily functioning.

Years Without a Diagnosis

Many Adults Discover ADHD Only in Their 20s, 30s, or Later

ADHD frequently goes unrecognised during childhood, particularly in individuals with predominantly inattentive symptoms. A proper assessment can provide clarity, reduce self-blame, and open the door to effective treatment and support.

Types of Doctors for ADHD Treatment

Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist (MBBS + MD in Psychiatry) plays a key role in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD in children, adolescents, and adults. They conduct a detailed clinical assessment, evaluate symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, emotional dysregulation, and executive functioning difficulties, and develop an individualised treatment plan. When appropriate, medication may be prescribed to improve attention, concentration, impulse control, and overall functioning. Psychiatrists also provide ongoing monitoring, medication adjustments, and long-term support to help individuals manage ADHD effectively across different stages of life.

Psychologist

A clinical psychologist (M.Phil. with RCI registration) provides evidence-based therapies and behavioural interventions that complement medical treatment for ADHD. Therapy focuses on improving attention, organisation, time management, emotional regulation, problem-solving skills, and self-esteem. Clinical psychologists may use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), behavioural therapy, executive functioning training, and coping strategies tailored to the individual's needs. They also work closely with parents, families, and caregivers through psychoeducation and parent-training programmes, helping create supportive environments that enhance learning, behaviour, relationships, and overall well-being.

Signs & Symptoms

Signs and Symptoms of ADHD

Difficulty focusing

Struggling to sustain attention on tasks, conversations, or reading, particularly things that aren't immediately engaging, while sometimes being able to hyperfocus intensely on things that are

Easily distracted

Attention pulled away by sights, sounds, or unrelated thoughts, making it hard to stay on track and easy to lose the thread of what you were doing

Hyperactivity and restlessness

In children, constant movement and difficulty staying seated; in adults, more often an internal restlessness or inability to switch off and relax

Impulsive behaviour

Acting or speaking without thinking it through, interrupting, or making hasty decisions that are later regretted

Poor organisation

Difficulty planning, prioritising, keeping track of belongings, and managing time, tasks, and deadlines, however hard the person tries

Academic or workplace difficulties

Underperformance relative to ability, missed deadlines, and difficulty with tasks needing sustained concentration

Relationship challenges

The strain that forgetfulness, distractibility, and impulsivity can place on relationships with partners, family, and colleagues

The Process

How ADHD Is Diagnosed at Anvaya Healthcare?

STEP 01

Booking & Initial Consultation

Contact our team to schedule an ADHD assessment at a convenient time, including evenings and weekends. The process begins with a comprehensive consultation to understand your concerns, symptoms, and goals for treatment.

STEP 02

Comprehensive ADHD Assessment

A psychiatrist conducts a detailed evaluation of attention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, emotional regulation, and executive functioning. The assessment also screens for co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, learning difficulties, and sleep problems, which commonly occur alongside ADHD.

STEP 03

Developmental History & Multi-Setting Evaluation

Because ADHD begins in childhood, understanding developmental history is essential. The assessment explores early behavioural patterns and evaluates how symptoms affect different areas of life, including home, school, university, work, and relationships. Information from parents, family members, teachers, or other relevant sources may be considered where appropriate.

STEP 04

DSM-5 Diagnosis & Personalised Treatment Plan

Diagnosis is based on established DSM-5 criteria to ensure an accurate and evidence-based assessment. Following diagnosis, a personalised treatment plan is developed according to the individual's age, symptoms, lifestyle, and goals, which may include medication, behavioural strategies, psychotherapy, parent training, academic or workplace support, and ongoing follow-up care.

What We Offer

Treatment Options for ADHD Available

01

Psychiatric consultation

The clinical foundation, establishing diagnosis, guiding treatment, and providing ongoing oversight of progress over time as needs change.

02

Medication management

Medication is one of the most effective treatments for ADHD, and where it's appropriate, a psychiatrist manages it carefully, adjusting to find what works with the fewest side effects. Not everyone with ADHD needs or wants medication, and it's always a considered decision, not automatic. Certain ADHD medications are regulated, and prescribing follows India's telemedicine rules, which may require an in-person visit at some stage — our team explains clearly how this works for each person.

03

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT adapted for ADHD helps with the practical and emotional sides — managing procrastination, negative self-beliefs built up over years, and the anxiety that often accompanies the condition.

04

Behavioural therapy

Particularly for children, structured approaches that build helpful behaviours and routines and reduce the difficulties ADHD creates at home and school.

05

Parent training for children

Equipping parents with specific strategies for supporting a child with ADHD, which is central to effective treatment for younger children.

06

Executive function coaching

Practical work on the skills ADHD affects most: planning, organising, time management, and follow-through, building systems and habits that work with an ADHD brain rather than against it. This is often where adults see the most immediate, tangible improvement in daily life.

07

Regular follow-ups

ADHD treatment needs monitoring and adjustment over time, and consistent follow-up is what keeps it working as circumstances, demands, and life stages change.

Why Choose Us

Why Choose Anvaya Healthcare?

ADHD requires proper specialist assessment — it’s frequently misdiagnosed, missed entirely, or confused with anxiety, and getting it right takes clinical expertise. A hurried assessment risks either labelling someone who doesn’t have ADHD or missing someone who does, both of which cause real harm. Our psychiatrists and psychologists are trained at India’s leading institutions, including AIIMS and NIMHANS, alongside IHBAS, Lady Hardinge Medical College, and VIMHANS, and hold MCI/NMC or RCI registration.

Having psychiatrists and psychologists working together matters in ADHD. The condition often needs both medical management and therapy, and it frequently comes with anxiety, depression, or learning difficulties that need addressing too. A multidisciplinary team means all of this is handled together rather than in fragments, by clinicians who actually communicate with each other.

Every plan at Anvaya Healthcare is personalised. ADHD in a young child, a struggling teenager, and an adult diagnosed late all call for different approaches, and treatment is shaped around the individual rather than applied uniformly. What a school-age child needs from treatment is quite different from what an overwhelmed working professional in Mumbai needs, and the plan reflects that.

For Mumbai residents comparing options, government mental health services are important but typically carry long waiting times and limited session frequency — constraints that make the consistent monitoring ADHD treatment needs difficult to sustain. Reliable access to the same team over time makes a real difference to outcomes.

Consultations start from ₹1,500 per session, with pricing varying by the specialist’s experience and seniority. Physical centres are available in Delhi NCR for in-person care where it’s needed, including for aspects of medication management, with ongoing monitoring and follow-up throughout treatment.

AIIMS, NIMHANS & IHBAS trained specialists

For ADHD treatment, improving attention, managing impulsivity, enhancing daily functioning, and achieving long-term success require the expertise, clinical judgement, and personalised care of experienced mental health professionals.

Got Questions?

FAQs

Is virtual ADHD treatment effective?

Yes. Assessment, therapy, psychoeducation, coaching, and ongoing monitoring all work well online, and research supports remote delivery of ADHD care. Where regulated medication is involved, some in-person contact may be required under India’s telemedicine rules, and the Anvaya Healthcare team guides you through this clearly so there are no surprises.

Can ADHD be diagnosed online?

Yes. A thorough ADHD assessment — covering current symptoms, developmental history, and how difficulties show up across settings, using DSM-5 criteria — can be conducted effectively online. Where additional in-person evaluation would help, this is arranged at one of our centres, so Mumbai families get a complete assessment either way.

How long does ADHD treatment take?

ADHD is usually a long-term condition, so treatment is about ongoing management rather than a fixed course. Many people reach a stable, well-managed routine and then continue with periodic follow-up. The intensity of treatment typically reduces once things are working well, moving from frequent sessions to occasional review.

Can children and adults receive ADHD care?

Yes. We treat ADHD across the lifespan — children, adolescents, and adults. Adult ADHD, often undiagnosed for years, is an important and growing area, and treatment can be genuinely life-changing for adults who finally understand the difficulties they’ve struggled with for decades.

Can I consult Anvaya Healthcare from Mumbai?

Yes — online ADHD treatment is available for people anywhere in India, including all of Mumbai. Contact us to book an initial assessment, and the team will match you with the right specialist for your situation.
