Tips to Prepare for Schizophrenia Consultation

Track symptoms and behavioral changes before the first session. When did things start shifting? What does a bad day look like versus a better one? Is the person sleeping? Eating? Has anything made things worse or temporarily better? These details help the psychiatrist assess accurately. Prepare the medical and medication history. Any previous diagnoses, hospitalisations, medications tried. If antipsychotics were used before, note which ones and whether they helped. Side effects that caused stopping are important to mention.

 

If a family member is willing and able to join the session, that perspective is valuable — especially in the early assessment phase, when the psychiatrist is building a picture from multiple angles.
