FAQs - Your Questions Answered

Find answers to the most common queries about our care and services.

Q-1. How do I choose the best online geriatric psychiatrist in Mumbai?

Look for MCI/NMC registered psychiatrists with specific training and experience in older adult mental health. At Anvaya Healthcare, our psychiatrists are trained at AIIMS, NIMHANS, and equivalent institutions, and see geriatric presentations regularly. Ask whether the psychiatrist will review existing medications as part of the assessment — this is standard in geriatric psychiatry and non-negotiable.

Q-2. Is online geriatric psychiatry effective?

Yes, for assessment, medication management, follow-up, and the psychotherapy components of treatment. The initial cognitive evaluation can be conducted online with good clinical utility. For detailed neuropsychological testing where dementia diagnosis needs confirmation, in-person assessment may be recommended alongside online consultations.

Q-3. Can family members join consultations?

Yes — and in geriatric psychiatry, family involvement is not just welcome but often clinically essential. For patients with cognitive difficulties, a family member’s account of changes over time is often the most important part of the assessment. Family members can join online consultations from the same room or from a different location.

Q-4. How often are follow-up sessions needed?

For stable patients on a consistent medication plan, follow-up is typically every four to eight weeks. During initiation of treatment, medication adjustment, or a period of clinical change, more frequent sessions — fortnightly or even weekly — are appropriate. The psychiatrist will recommend a schedule based on the clinical picture.

Q-5. Can I consult Anvaya Healthcare from Mumbai?

Yes — online consultations are available for families anywhere in India, including all of Mumbai and the wider MMR. Contact us to book an initial assessment, and the team will walk you through what to expect and help match you with the right psychiatrist for the presentation.

Getting older is not, by itself, a mental health condition. But the later decades of life bring a specific set of challenges — physical illness, loss of independence, bereavement, changed family roles, reduced social connection, and sometimes cognitive changes — that can have profound effects on mental health. When these challenges cross into clinical territory, the right specialist matters.

Geriatric psychiatry is the branch of psychiatry that focuses on the mental health of people aged 60 and above. A geriatric psychiatrist understands how psychiatric conditions present differently in older adults, how medication interacts differently with an ageing body, how physical conditions and mental health are more tightly intertwined in this age group, and how family dynamics and caregiving responsibilities shape both the patient’s wellbeing and the treatment plan.

The scale of this need in India is significant. Indian studies have found psychiatric morbidity in 33.3% of the geriatric population, with depression the most common diagnosis at 22.6%, dementia at 14%, and anxiety disorders at 2.4%. Depression prevalence specifically ranges from 22.2% to 55.2% across different Indian study populations — a range that reflects how widely underdiagnosed it remains. Crucially, depression in older adults is frequently missed because it presents differently: as fatigue, irritability, sleep disturbance, or somatic complaints rather than the sadness that people associate with the condition.

For Mumbai families, the practical challenge is access. An older adult with mobility limitations, or a family managing a parent with early cognitive changes, cannot easily navigate a hospital outpatient department or a clinic in a different part of the city.

Mental Health Conditions Our Geriatric Psychiatrists Work With

Dementia and memory concerns — not every memory difficulty in older age is dementia, but when memory lapses are becoming more frequent, affecting daily functioning, or accompanied by personality and behavioural changes, a specialist psychiatric assessment is essential. Indian studies have found dementia in 14% of geriatric psychiatric patients, with prevalence in the community ranging from 0.84% to 6.7% depending on the study population. Early identification changes what can be done, and the family needs support as much as the patient.

Depression in older adults — this is the most commonly missed mental health condition in elderly Indians. Indian studies have found depression prevalence ranging from 22.2% to 55.2% across different geriatric populations. An older person who has stopped eating properly, who has withdrawn from family, who complains constantly of pain or tiredness without a clear medical cause, or who expresses hopelessness about the future may be depressed — but these presentations often get attributed to ageing rather than treated as a clinical condition that responds to intervention.

Anxiety disorders — health anxiety, social anxiety following bereavement or retirement, and generalised anxiety are common in older adults and are treatable. Anxiety in this population is often accompanied by physical symptoms — chest tightness, breathlessness, dizziness — which makes it easy to miss or to attribute entirely to a cardiac or respiratory condition.

Sleep disorders — disrupted sleep is extremely common in older adults, and its causes are multiple: pain, depression, anxiety, medication side effects, cognitive changes, or changed sleep architecture with age. A geriatric psychiatrist can distinguish between these causes and address them appropriately, rather than simply prescribing a sleeping tablet that may not be safe in this age group.

Late-life bipolar disorder — both new presentations of bipolar disorder in later life and the ongoing management of long-standing bipolar disorder in older patients require specialist oversight, particularly around medication as comorbidities and other medications increase.

Behavioural changes — agitation, aggression, wandering, or significant personality changes in an older adult that have appeared or worsened over time. These are often symptoms of an underlying condition rather than “just how they are now,” and require assessment.

How Online Geriatric Psychiatry Consultations Work at Anvaya Healthcare?

Booking — contact our team directly to arrange a time. For families managing an older adult who cannot easily use technology independently, a family member can handle the booking and, where needed, join the consultation.

Comprehensive psychiatric assessment — the first session covers the full psychiatric and medical history, current symptoms and their timeline, medications already being taken, functional capacity in daily activities, and, critically, input from whoever is most familiar with recent changes in the patient. For dementia assessment specifically, the family member’s observations are often as informative as the patient’s own account.

Medication review — older adults are frequently on multiple medications for physical health conditions, and psychiatric medication in this group requires careful selection. A geriatric psychiatrist reviews existing medication before adding anything, specifically for interactions and dose adjustments appropriate to an older body.

Cognitive evaluation — structured assessment of memory, orientation, attention, and executive function where cognitive changes are part of the presentation. This can be conducted online for an initial screen, with more detailed in-person neuropsychological testing recommended where the screen raises concerns.

Personalised treatment planning — a plan built around the specific patient: their diagnosis, their physical health, their living situation, and the family’s capacity to support them.

Follow-up consultations — psychiatric care for older adults is ongoing. Medication effects need monitoring, dose adjustments are common, and the clinical picture in conditions like dementia changes over time. Online follow-up at our Dwarka, Vasant Vihar, and Gurugram centres is available for Mumbai families at a frequency appropriate to the presentation — typically every four to eight weeks for stable patients, more frequently when treatment is being initiated or adjusted.

Treatment Approaches Used by Our Geriatric Psychiatrists

Medication management — carefully selected psychiatric medications adjusted for the physiology of an older adult. This is considerably more nuanced than prescribing for younger adults: doses are often lower, certain drug classes are avoided or used with particular caution in the elderly, and interactions with existing medications for blood pressure, diabetes, cardiac conditions, thyroid issues, or pain need to be assessed at every step.

Psychotherapy for older adults — therapy works at any age, and adapted versions of structured therapy approaches are effective in older adults who are cognitively intact. Individual sessions addressing depression, anxiety, adjustment to major life changes — retirement, bereavement, changed roles in the family, a new diagnosis — are a meaningful part of treatment alongside medication. Many older adults have significant capacity for reflective work that younger patients don’t yet have.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) — particularly effective for depression and anxiety in older adults who are cognitively intact. CBT adapted for this age group produces measurable improvements and can be delivered online effectively, including for Mumbai residents.

Family counselling — in geriatric psychiatry, the family is almost always part of the clinical picture. Educating family members about what’s happening, what to expect, how to support without creating dependency or enabling avoidance, and managing their own emotional response to watching a parent change. Caregiver stress is often severe in families managing an older relative with dementia or depression, and the caregiver’s own wellbeing needs to be part of the plan.

Lifestyle recommendations — sleep hygiene, appropriate physical activity, nutrition, social engagement, and cognitive stimulation are all clinically relevant in geriatric mental health and are built into the treatment plan.

Caregiver education — families managing a relative with dementia or serious depression need specific guidance: how to respond to difficult behaviours, how to maintain their own health, and when to consider additional support or residential care.

Why Online Consultation Specifically Makes Sense for Older Adults and Their Families?

This is a population for whom the barriers to in-person specialist care are particularly high — and where online access makes the most practical difference.

Mobility is often limited. An older adult with arthritis, post-fracture rehabilitation, cardiac conditions, or simply the fatigue that comes with serious illness may find a hospital visit genuinely difficult or exhausting. The clinic visit that seems routine for a younger person can require significant preparation, physical effort, and recovery time for an elderly patient. An online consultation from the living room, with a family member present, removes that burden entirely.

Mumbai’s geography adds its own layer. A family in Borivali managing a parent with early dementia doesn’t need to navigate the city to reach a specialist. For the older adult, an unfamiliar environment — a new clinic, a different part of the city, unfamiliar staff — can increase disorientation and anxiety rather than helping. For patients with moderate cognitive impairment, familiar surroundings during the consultation improve the quality of what the assessment can capture.

Caregiver participation is significantly easier online. A son or daughter who is the primary caregiver but who lives in a different part of Mumbai — or in Pune, or abroad — can join the consultation remotely. For families spread across locations, online geriatric psychiatry allows everyone relevant to be in the same conversation, which is often the first time that’s been possible. A daughter in Navi Mumbai and a son in Bangalore can both attend the same consultation with a parent in Borivali.

Continuity matters particularly in this age group. Geriatric psychiatric care is long-term; the relationship between the patient, the family, and the psychiatrist builds over time and is itself therapeutically important. Online access means follow-up happens consistently, rather than being deferred because the travel is too difficult this week or because the monsoon has made the road impossible.

Why Anvaya Healthcare?

The psychiatrists at Anvaya Healthcare are trained at India’s most rigorous institutions — AIIMS, NIMHANS, IHBAS, Lady Hardinge Medical College, and VIMHANS — and hold MCI/NMC registration. Geriatric psychiatry requires this level of training: the interactions between psychiatric conditions, physical illness, and multiple medications in older adults are complex, and managing them safely requires specialist clinical depth.

Every treatment plan is built around the specific patient and family. A 68-year-old with early depression and hypertension needs a very different plan from a 78-year-old with moderate dementia whose family is struggling with caregiving. The plan reflects the full picture.

Care is confidential and genuinely compassionate. Older adults and their families often come to us carrying significant distress — sometimes after months of watching changes go unexplained or unaddressed. We take that seriously, and we approach both the patient and the family without judgment.

Online consultations start from ₹1,500 per session, with pricing varying by the psychiatrist’s experience and seniority. Government geriatric psychiatric services, where they exist, are important — but they are characterised by long waiting times, high patient volumes, and limited time per consultation. For families who need consistent, unhurried specialist input, online private psychiatric care offers something qualitatively different.

Centres in Dwarka, Vasant Vihar, and Gurugram for in-person visits where needed. Online for everything else — available from anywhere in India, including all of Mumbai.
