Before you book

Psychiatrist, psychologist or therapist?

These three roles are often used interchangeably in India, which leads to people booking the wrong appointment and paying twice.

Medical doctor

Psychiatrist

MBBS followed by MD or DNB in Psychiatry. Can diagnose, prescribe medication and admit patients.

  • Suspected bipolar disorder or psychosis
  • Symptoms affecting sleep, appetite or work
  • Medication review or side effects

Not a prescriber

Clinical psychologist

MPhil in Clinical Psychology with RCI registration. Conducts psychological testing and delivers structured therapy.

  • Formal IQ or personality assessment
  • Structured CBT or DBT programmes
  • Learning disability evaluation

Varies by training

Counsellor / psychotherapist

Qualifications vary widely. Check for a recognised master’s degree and supervised practice hours.

  • Relationship or workplace stress
  • Grief and life transitions
  • Ongoing talk-therapy support
Choosing well

Six things worth checking first

1

Verify the registration number

Every practising psychiatrist has an NMC or state council number you can search publicly.

2

Match the sub-speciality

A de-addiction specialist is not the right first call for a child with ADHD.

3

Ask about session length

A first psychiatric assessment usually needs 45–60 minutes. Ten-minute slots rarely allow one.

4

Confirm the language

Describing symptoms in your first language matters more than most people expect.

5

Check follow-up access

Medication changes need review within 2–4 weeks. Ask how that is handled.

6

Clarify total cost

Ask whether investigations, therapy sessions and follow-ups are billed separately.

Common questions

Frequently asked

No. Psychiatrists in India accept direct appointments and no GP referral is required in private practice. Government hospital OPDs may route you through a general registration counter first.

A proper first assessment usually runs 45 to 60 minutes, covering symptom history, medical background, family history and a mental state examination. Follow-up appointments are typically 15 to 20 minutes.

Not necessarily. Many presentations are managed with therapy, lifestyle changes or watchful monitoring. Medication is one option among several, and you can ask the psychiatrist to explain the reasoning, expected benefit and side effects before agreeing.

Since the Mental Healthcare Act 2017 and subsequent IRDAI directions, insurers are required to cover mental illness on the same basis as physical illness. Coverage in practice varies by policy, particularly for outpatient consultations, so check your specific terms.

For follow-ups, medication reviews and many common conditions, evidence supports telepsychiatry as comparable to in-person care. First assessments, suspected psychosis and any situation involving safety risk are better handled face to face.

Clinical records are confidential under the Mental Healthcare Act 2017. There are defined exceptions, including situations involving risk to life and specific court orders. Your psychiatrist can explain how these apply in your case.

Any previous prescriptions, discharge summaries, test reports and a written list of current medications. If a family member has observed the symptoms closely, having them present for part of the session is often useful.

Through the weighted criteria published at the top of this page, using public registry data, hospital profiles and publication records. No listing was paid for. Two of the clinicians listed practise at Anvaya centres, which is disclosed in the methodology.
