Psychoanalysis

Explores unconscious patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior. It is a more intensive, long-term process compared to modern psychodynamic therapy.

Psychodynamic Therapy

A modern, often shorter version of psychoanalysis. It helps a person become aware of how past experiences and relationships shape present-day behaviors.

Supportive Psychotherapy

Focuses on bolstering a person’s coping mechanisms by providing empathy and encouraging the expression of feelings.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Most common and effective forms of therapy. It explores the link between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and helps replace negative patterns with positive ones.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

A form of CBT that teaches behavioral skills, such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation. It is often used to treat borderline personality disorder.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

A mindfulness-based CBT therapy that helps a person accept difficult thoughts and feelings while committing to goals that align with their values.

Exposure Therapy

A type of CBT used to treat anxiety disorders like phobias and PTSD by gradually exposing a person to a feared situation or object in a safe, controlled environment.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Used to treat trauma and PTSD by having the client recall distressing events while performing specific eye movements.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

A short-term therapy specifically adapted for children and adolescents experiencing PTSD.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)

A short-term therapy that addresses interpersonal issues, such as unresolved grief or role disputes, to help improve communication skills and relationships.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Focuses on a person’s strengths to develop solutions to current problems, rather than concentrating on past issues.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

This interventions use mindfulness and meditation techniques to help people observe and accept their thoughts and emotions without judgment.

Group Therapy

Brings together a small group of people to share experiences and provide support for similar issues under the guidance of a therapist.

Family Therapy

Involves working with an entire family unit to address issues affecting the mental health of an individual or the family as a whole.

Couples Therapy

Designed to help intimate partners improve their communication, resolve conflicts, and address relationship issues.

Creative Arts Therapy

Uses various creative methods, like art, dance, music, or poetry, to help a person express and understand their feelings.

Play Therapy

Uses toys and games to help young children communicate their emotions and experiences in a safe environment.

Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT)

Involves using trained animals to help reduce anxiety and provide comfort to clients.
